Streams of Mercy Earthquake Relief Update - Little Stars Children’s Home
From Devastation to Restoration
On March 28, a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck South East Asia near one of our partner projects.
Little Stars Children’s Home – home to 40 children – was at the epicenter. Miraculously, all 40 children survived without injury, even as their building was left cracked and unstable. In the weeks that followed, continuous aftershocks and monsoon rains forced the kids and staff to live in makeshift shelters: the boys under a field tent, the girls in a temporary safe house, and staff in tents beside the damaged home.
Life was difficult, but hope was alive.
Faced with severe structural damage, it became clear that only a full structural restoration could make the home safe again.
Engineers initially stabilized the building with internal steel beams as a short-term fix, but long-term repairs were urgently needed. Contractors estimated the full rebuild (new foundations, columns, plumbing, electrical) would cost over $23,000. Thanks to your generous support, the necessary funds were raised.
By June, work was underway. We are thrilled to report that the project has stayed on track and is now nearly finished!
Final Repairs and Amazing Progress
Today, the Little Stars home is on the verge of being fully rebuilt and safe again. According to project leader Jeremy, the main structural reconstruction is almost complete – only a couple of small sections remain to be cemented. All windows and doors have been installed, and all the interior walls are repaired. One of the last big tasks is reinforcing and refinishing the cracked west exterior wall, which is underway now. Over the next few weeks, plumbers and electricians will finish restoring water and power systems, followed by a fresh coat of paint throughout the home. This is an incredible turnaround in just a few months – truly “beauty from ashes” for these children.
Even as construction crews worked on the building, the children of Little Stars kept working on their futures. By God’s grace, all the kids remained healthy and kept up with their studies during the upheaval – their recent report cards are a testament to their resilience. The atmosphere is now one of excitement and relief as they are once again living in their home.
Serving Others in the Midst of the Storm
One of the most inspiring parts of this story has been the unwavering perseverance of the Little Stars family throughout the crisis. Incredibly, they never “pressed pause” on helping those around them. Even while still living in tents, they organized food and supply distributions for families throughout their city. Every act of aid was given in the spirit of compassion, turning a time of trial into a powerful witness of hope. That outreach continued even as rebuilding progressed. The result? Many of those touched by their kindness have been deeply impacted. In a city rocked by disaster, the Little Stars children have been shining a light of resilience. They are not just survivors – they are helpers, showing love in action.
